READINGS
(What follows are some of the best current readings on stress and mind/body health. Most are available in paperback at the major bookstores. JB)
STRESS AND HEALTH
Change Your Brain, Change Your Life, Daniel Amen, Times Books, 1998. Dr. Amen explores stress and performance disorders with the SPECT scan, a MRI-like instrument that tracks brain blood flow and metabolism in the brain. His analysis provides a window into health and high performance.
Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers, Robert Sapolsky, Freeman books, 1994. A intelligent, amusing overview on stress and the body. (Zebras don’t get ulcers because they don’t have the long-term cognitive stress humans do).
Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman, Bantam Books, 1995. Summary of sound research on how being psychologically "wise" can improve quality of life and prove more helpful than the "old" intelligence.
Full Catastrophe Living, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Delta Books, 1990. Meditative and breathing techniques to mange stress and pain.
Healing and the Mind, Bill Moyers, Doubleday, 1993. Transcripts of the well-done PBS series on the psychology of health. Moyers interviews physicians, psychologists, and patients on strategies manage illness and optimize health and well-being.
From Stress to Strength, Robert Eliot, Bantam Books, 1994. Eliot a cardiologist, has developed a physiological stress test to identify what he calls the "hot reactor", individuals with a strong physical reaction to work and personal challenge. Eliot reports that these hot reactors, with none of the other traditional risk factors, have a very high incidence of heart disease. His other book Is It Worth Dying For?.
COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY
The Feeling Good Workbook, David Burns, William Morrow, 1993. While the title is over-done, Burns offers a well written introduction to cognitive psychology and presents a number of exercises useful in beginning to modify ones self-talk and moderate anxiety and depression. Burn’ big paperback, Ten Days to Self-Esteem, is another good book on cognitive psychology.
Learned Optimism, Martin Seligman, Alfred Knopf, 1990. Seligman explore how one’s psychological approach to events shapes mood. He makes a case that one can avoid the cognitive pitfalls that paralyze one’s response to setbacks and cultivate an approach that can improve personal performance, health and quality of life.
GENERAL BOOKS ON STRESS MANAGEMENT
The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook, Davis, Eshelman & McKay, New Harbinger Publications, 1995. This is the fourth edition of a practical, basic review on stress management. The authors briefly present the different relaxation procedures and their application in this big paperback edition. It can be a good starting place on techniques.
STRESS AND MARRIAGE
Why Marriages Succeed Or Fail, John Gottman, Simon and Schuster, 1994. How can one talk about stress without addressing most individuals major source of support or disappointment. Gottman is a researcher that has methodically looked at relationships for years and has important observations on how to fortify both good and fragile marriages.
MASTERING A CHANGING ENVIRONMENT
Working Without a Net, Morris Shechtman, Prentice Hall, 1994. Shechtman proposes an approach to our changing business environment. He suggests that preparing oneself for ongoing change is a fundamental skill for the 90’s and beyond.
